Lok Sabha Election 2019 LIVE: Congress’ eastern UP incharge Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will not lock horns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Varanasi as the party announced that it would repeat Ajay Rai from the seat. Rumour mills were abuzz with the news of the Congress fielding Gandhi after she hinted that she was ready to take on PM Modi if party chief Rahul Gandhi decided.

Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party released its manifesto for the 2019 election, with the focus on full statehood for Delhi. Party chief Arvind Kejriwal also launched a scathing attack on the Congress, saying the AAP made several efforts for an alliance but was snubbed by the grand old party. “We had never dreamt of a ‘gathbandhan’ with Congress but today, keeping in mind the Modi-Shah challenge, we decided to have a ‘gathbandhan’ on 33 seats. We made all efforts in the past two months but had a feeling that they did not want an alliance. They put conditions but went back on them repeatedly,” he said.

Kejriwal, who is speaking at AAP’s manifesto launch event right now appeals to the Delhites not to let Modi return to power. Launching an attack on the Congress, the party chief says, “If Congress was in a position of winning seven seats, we would have left seven seats for them. But the party is not even in the position to win a single seat. It will not get any Hindu votes and the Muslims are a bit confused.” Sharpening his attack, Kejriwal adds, “I am saying this with a lot of sadness, if Modi-Shah come back to power, only Rahul gandhi will be responsible.”

Speaking to CNN-News18 shortly after his candidature was announced, Ajay Rai says, “There were talks of Priyanka contesting, but I just got a call to contest. It is the party high command that takes such decisions. We party workers were ready for Priyanka to contest.” The Congress candidate from Varanasi adds that Priyanka will be campaigning for him.

The AAP manifesto titled ‘Lekar Rahenge Poorn Rajya’ (We Will Take Full Statehood), as the name suggests, primarily focuses on full statehood for Delhi. “AAP will gain full statehood for Delhi…the seven seats of delhi will play a key role in forming the government at the Centre,” says Kejriwal. “Most of the problems related to women security, health, pollution and corruption persist in Delhi because the state government’s hands are tied by the Centre which controls everything,” he adds.

Shiromani Akali Dal’s Parkash Singh Badal and Lok Janshakti Party chief Ram Vilas Paswan will also be in attendance when the PM files his nominations at 11.30 am on Friday.
